For this paper, which will be a 6-8 page double spaced paper (12 pt. Times New Roman font and one inch margins, please), you will be asked to write a paper that includes either analysis or synthesis (or both) of at least one the readings we have done from the beginning of the semester to now. Over the semester, you have been asked to read actively and responsively, composing and developing original questions on the texts we have read and discussed. This assignment is your opportunity to formally attempt to answer one of the questions you have posed, using research to supplement and support your claims.
By “analysis,” I mean that I would like you to explore and feel your way toward an answer to a question about a particular choice or particular choices that were made in one (or more) of the texts you encountered. Your analysis should begin with an observation, something you noticed about the way that a particular text was constructed or formulated, or about a particular word or phrase choice. From there, you should work to answer a “how” or “why” question of your own making, related to your observation, showing why or how your observation or your answer is significant–i.e. why it matters and what it illuminates.
By “synthesis,” I mean that I would like you to explore a meaningful connection between something you encountered in a text from this semester (or a question raised by that text) and something from your own personal experience. For example, perhaps when you read something this semester, or heard something said about a particular text in class discussion, or wrote about a text in your notes or homework assignments, it may have reminded you of something you had encountered elsewhere (for example, a text you read either in class or outside of class, or a film, a song, a poem, or just something you have witnessed, felt, or experienced). For your paper, you would identify the connection and explore why it matters. Another possible approach might be this: perhaps while reading a particular text you were tempted to wonder how the ideas expressed within it would relate to your contemporary world, as a student at Bryant in 2019. In other words, how would one of the texts be different if it were written today, and how? Or, to think about it in another way, could it even be written at all, and if not, why not? In short, should you choose to focus on synthesis in your paper, I’d like you to show how the connection that you make offers new and mutually instructive insight about both the text and your own experience.
You will also be asked to do research to supplement your claims. You will need to find at least 3-5 credible and trustworthy sources that will demonstrate your engagement with informed social discourse on the topic you have selected. You will need to cite your sources using the MLA citation format, including parenthetical in-text citations and a works cited page, which will not be included in the overall page count.
