Explain the potential ethical issues in the situation. Are there conflicting ethical principles?

Case Study:

General Psychology – Addictions

A friend of yours works in a setting where he has to complete substance abuse assessments. He is troubled by the situation he finds himself in and has asked for your advice. According to your friend, an accurate assessment takes 60–90 minutes, but he is only being given 30 minutes to complete each assessment. He is very concerned that the information may not properly represent what is being assessed and may potentially cause harm. He has tried to discuss this with the person in charge of the setting, but that person just wants the assessments done in 30 minutes and is unwilling to extend more time.

Develop a list of at least fifteen questions to ask in your informational interview. Research possible questions to include using the Argosy University online library resources and the Internet.

Assignment 3: Preparing for the Informational Interview

An informational interview is a recommended tool for exploring career options. In M3 Assignment 2, you will submit a written account of the informational interview you conducted with the psychology professional.

You will ask the interviewee to describe the educational and training steps (the career paths) he or she took to reach the current position. You will also ask the interviewee to describe, in some detail, the job responsibilities associated with the position. The interview must be at least thirty minutes long. Ideally, it should be conducted in person. If that is not feasible, a phone interview is adequate.

Begin to prepare for this informational interview by identifying the professional you plan to interview. Ideally, the professional should be engaged in a career that you hope to pursue. (You may want to identify a second candidate in case your initial choice is unable to complete the interview with you.) This professional may work in your local area, but that is not necessary. If you cannot identify a professional easily, ask your friends and family if they know anyone who works in the field of psychology. You may also want to phone your local community mental health center or social services agency to ask for names and contact information of potential professionals you could interview. Contact your facilitator for guidance if you have difficulty in identifying someone.

Tasks

In a 1- to 2-page Microsoft Word document, address the following:

  • Provide the following identifying information about the individual you have selected:
    • The name
    • The job title (licensed psychologist, social worker, or case manager)
    • The level of education (a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree)
    • A description of job responsibilities or day-to-day tasks
    • The type of license, if applicable
    • The state of residence and practice
    • The e-mail address or phone number
  • Develop a list of at least fifteen questions to ask in your informational interview. Research possible questions to include using the Argosy University online library resources and the Internet. Refer to the Job Resources document to conduct an Internet search using the search terms “informational interview questions” in order to find suggested questions. Be sure to put them into your own words for the purpose of this assignment and to give credit to your source by using in-text citations and a reference list in APA format.
  • Ask the interviewee about his or her work, academic preparation, and advice. In addition, include the interviewee’s answers to questions on the following topics:
    • The experience, skills, and knowledge necessary for success in a career in psychology or in graduate school
    • Relevant professional organizations
    • His or her views on professional ethics and academic integrity
    • The role of psychological research in his or her work
    • His or her greatest challenges and rewards
    • His or her reasons for choosing the field
  • Develop a script (word-for-word written statement) that you will use during the warm-up (meet-and-greet) portion of the interview. What will you say to the interviewee when you meet him or her? What will you do? For example, will you shake the person’s hand and introduce yourself? Include small talk of a professional nature that will serve as an introduction and explanation of the purpose of the interview. Demonstrate in your script your ability to interact professionally and effectively in a professional environment.
  • This assignment is preparatory work for the interview to be conducted later in this course. Do not conduct the interview for this assignment.

Explain to Bethany, in lay person’s language, the 8 theoretical perspectives and how each of the theoretical perspectives can help a social worker understand different aspects of her family’s situation.

You are required to write 1 page per question. Cite the material from the textbook, videos and power points to justify for your reflections.

Case Study Reflection Question – Chapter 2 – Dimensions of Human Behavior Person in the Environment (Green Book) Elizabeth D. Hutchinson

1. Like individuals in other professional groups, social workers tend to develop and use language among themselves that others not associated with the profession might consider being ‘jargonese’ or difficult to understand. Although Bethany is planning to go to nursing school, she is very much interested in what social workers do and is curious about how a social worker would assess the problems in her family. Explain to Bethany, in lay person’s language, the 8 theoretical perspectives and how each of the theoretical perspectives can help a social worker understand different aspects of her family’s situation.

Chapter 5: The Psychological Person: Cognition, Emotion, and Self – Dimensions of Human Behavior Person in the Environment (Green Book) Elizabeth D. Hutchinson

1. Of all the theories discussed in the chapter, choose one from each category (self in relationships, concept of stress, coping and adaptation) that you think might be MOST helpful in understanding Dan’s situation. Provide a rationale as to why you think these particular theories would be most helpful and discuss how you would use each of the theories that you’ve selected in Dan’s case.

What strategies could you use here to help you have more success and prevent accidental mistakes?

This exercise involves exploring ethical writing practices and will include three parts:

· Part One

o Discuss why you think plagiarism is so problematic in higher education today. Have you seen examples of it? What do you think you can personally do to help develop your own academic voice? Does it stir up any emotions when you think others are “getting away with it”?

· Part Two

o Write a two-paragraph summary about what you have learned about I/O Psychology this week and how it could be applied in your own circumstances. Include at least one quote, but for the rest, paraphrase (rewrite in your own words) your paragraph (also applying citations appropriately throughout).

§ Highlight your quote in blue. Highlight your citations for your self-worded explanations/commentary in yellow.

§ Be sure to also include correctly formatted citations prior to running the document. (For examples of how to write citations, see the Ashford Wiring Center.)

§ Run this summary through your course similarity tool (Turn It In). Make corrections as indicated prior to submitting.

o Part Three

§ Discuss your results (two to three paragraphs) and the process of intentionally developing your academic writing skills.

§ Why do you think it is important to cite resources when you are putting into your own words?

§ Do you have any bad habits you need to break?

§ How much more difficult would it be to avoid this situation when using websites to assist you in research?

§ What strategies could you use here to help you have more success and prevent accidental mistakes?

This exercise should be a minimum of two to three pages and should adequately discuss all questions posed, demonstrate maturating self-awareness and a personal commitment to developing your academic voice.

A reference page is required and sources must include correct citations within the writing exercise when utilized.

Ethics are an important part of the field of psychology. Violating the ethical principles has a wide-reaching effect on an organization and those involved.

View the APA website.

Locate an article on the website regarding ethical issues. Sometimes students have trouble finding or picking an article.  You might try a search that includes some common ethical issues in the search terms.  For example: informed consent, confidentiality, dual relationships, etc. Make sure that the issue clearly involves the psychological field and the ethical issues effecting psychologists.  Make sure you present a conflict, not a review of ethical principles. *HINT* APA’s Publication Monitor on Psychology is a great resource for this assignment.  You will find ethical discussions here along with a number of articles written by Stephen Behnke, a long standing member of the APA Ethics Committee.

Write a 700- to 1,050-word paper that discusses the following:

  • The issue in detail.
  • The ethical principle in this article that has been violated

A summary of the aritcle you have chosen could  cover these first two points.  Make sure you are clearly identifying the violation.

  • Diversity implications that are involved. Diversity here refers to special populations.  In other words, would this issue or the solution be the same across all people or is it unique because of the people involved?  Think about the isses of gender, age, sexual orientation, race and culture.  If none of these are an issue, explain why this does not exist.
  • A mitigation strategy for the ethical issue.  Mitigation here refers to solution.  Is there a solution presented in the article?  What is it?  Do you agree with the solution?  Why or why not?  If there is no solution presented, please suggest one.

Format your paper consistent with APA guidelines.

Explain how creative decision-making can improve our ability to make better decisions, considering the numerous obstacles to do so. Include an analysis about how good decision making can potentially affect productivity and job satisfaction

Decision-Making

Our text suggests that objective reality is often significantly different from perceived reality and is an important variable to consider when making decisions within an organization. In addition, attribution theory describes how people create the explanations for their own and others’ actions, as well as the outcomes of the applied behaviors. Based on these two premises, consider the following and then, formulate an analysis about how attribution theory and bias (according to chapter 8 in our text) can explain human behaviors within organizations and industry.

• Use, or closely follow, this template for your paper.

• Consider the following information associated with attribution theory to support to your writing about decision-making:

o perceptions

o bounded reality

o cognitive biases

o conjunction fallacy

o consistency

o consensus

o distinctiveness

o fundamental attribution error

o creative decision making

• Writing Content

o Decision-Making

 Based on our content this week, discuss the importance of rationale decision-making in an organization, using necessary citations. Include how bounded reality, cognitive biases, and conjunction fallacy might affect decision-making.

o Attribution Theory

 Explain attribution theory using necessary citations. Include a discussion about the effects of consistency, consensus, distinctiveness, and fundamental attribution error. Consider inclusion about the effects of perception, primacy and recency effects, selective perceptions, contrast effect, stereotyping to further support your discussion.

o Personal Experience: Inaccurate Judgement

 Based on our content this week, consider your own experiences with others. Have your actions ever been judged inaccurately by a person such as a boss, a peer, or a family member? How could this experience support your thesis about whether or not attribution theory and bias affect human behaviors with organization?

 Can self-serving, or other, bias affect one’s perception of a behavior?

o Creative Decision Making

 Explain how creative decision-making can improve our ability to make better decisions, considering the numerous obstacles to do so. Include an analysis about how good decision making can potentially affect productivity and job satisfaction.

Writing considerations:

a. The introduction paragraph should introduce your topic and clearly explain what the paper will address.

b. Headings can be used to organize your information. See template . (Each heading should include at least two paragraphs – minimum.)

c. Each paragraph should make a point which can be linked back to your introduction paragraph. Design the topic sentence to embody what the paragraph will entail.

d. The most important consideration in the body paragraphs is the argument that you want to develop (is or is not perceptions, attribution theory and bias applicable?) in response to the topic (applicability of perception, attribution theory and bias). This argument is developed by making and linking points in and between paragraphs.

e. The conclusion paragraph should restate your thesis (your suggestion that perceptions, attribution theory and bias does or does not apply to human behaviors in organizations.)

Your assignment should be a minimum of five to six double-spaced pages, and should adequately discuss the topic, demonstrate maturating self-awareness, and include at least one peer-reviewed source, in addition to your text. Use the rubric to check for thoroughness. Include frequent citation to resources.
