Parent Post

Until the arrival of smartphones, console and PC gaming ruled the marketplace. Recently though, I believe we are seeing the decline of consoles as a primary gaming medium. The model in which a consumer plunks down $400 for a console and $60 per game cannot last. Mobile gaming has advanced to a point where the gameplay experience is comparable to consoles. Graphics and sound have greatly improved. Tablets with more and more advanced chipsets continue to roll out. At only one or two dollars for an independent game and five to ten dollars for a triple-A title, it is no wonder that mobile gaming is such big business.

Even the console gaming experience has changed. On-demand services already exist for Xbox Live and the Playstation Network. Meanwhile, Gamestops have closed all around the country. Just as printed media is going out of business, so too are the brick-and-mortar purveyors of tangible media.
