Research Method in Psychology: Academic Task

Your Base Group also provides a structure for completing academic tasks, especially those involving critical discourse. Research suggests that critical

discourse becomes easier and more effective in the context of positive relationships (Johnson, 2000). You may recognize this effect in your own life

when you consider those people in your life with whom you engage in most conflict. Ironically perhaps, we are much more likely to have conflict with

those people who are closest to us, be it our partner, close friend, parent, etc. This does not necessarily mean that we don’t have conflict with other

people, but rather that we often avoid conflict in formal contexts. During the course of each module, I hope that your Base Group becomes an

increasingly safe place for individual members to share in critical discourse – that is, to engage in the process of formulating (e.g., summarizing,

elaborating) and fermenting complex ideas (criticizing ideas, asking for justification, taking an alternative viewpoint, etc).
