Purpose: The purpose of Assignment 5 is to enable you to understand the importance of workers who are outside of the union movement, why it is crucial that unions consider their interests, and the barriers to broader organizing in the current context.Instructions:Write an essay of 1500 words on the problems and prospects of organizing unorganized workers. You must address each of the topics listed below (each topic is of equal value).Why is it so important that unions focus their energy and resources on organizing the unorganized?Describe and explain the major barriers to the increased unionization of women in “hard to organize” sectors and workplaces.Do the experiences of organizing informal workers in India, or immigrant janitors in the United States, provide any lessons as to how unions can adopt new strategies that will increase women’s trade union participation?For the first topic, your answer should consider the importance of organizing for women specifically, for society more generally, and for unions themselves. For the second topic, consider the general and specific challenges that make it difficult to organize workers in the sectors discussed in Unit 6 (e.g., the role of employers, workplace issues, labour force issues, and union policies).
