The nurse manager and leader play a role in the reengineering of healthcare by promoting the necessary changes needed to improve their organization. Reengineering is defined as “fundamental rethinking and radical redesign of business process to achieve dramatic improvements in critical measures of performance such as cost, service, and speed” (“What is reengineering”, 2019). The main goal of reengineering is improving the quality of care while reducing the cost. Advancing technology and educating staff on new practices is essential for health care organizations to sustain and nurse managers/ leaders play a key role in facilitating the changes. Health care is faced with fast changing challenges including staffing, insurance reimbursements, politics and patient demographics. Health care organizations and the nursing leaders among them must continue to evolve with the changing world around them in order to survive. This evolution is the reengineering of health care. It is the nursing managers and leader’s duty to advocate for their patients and staff who serve them.

The nurse manager is responsible for reengineering healthcare by creating a safe, professional environment for employees, patients and the organization. This culture can be passed along generations to continue growing professionally and creating an optimal, safe patient care. Managers need strong leadership and communication skills to make this possible as they should be able to balance and be the bridge between employees, patients and the organization. A manager can positively influence people towards a goal if he/she has strong leadership skills such as communication, integrity, courage, initiative and an ability to handle stress. This individual is often admired in their efforts to think critically, set goals and skillfully communicate and collaborate to reengineer the healthcare.
Health care reengineering is a powerful methodology that helps organizations reorder priorities, provide more cost-effective care, and increase value to customers. It should be driven by what the customer wants and what the market needs. (Boland, 1996).
With the help of managers, who are the ones in the middle of patients, employees and the organization the above mentioned can be possible.

A nurse manager plays many roles as a leader in healthcare. They have added pressures of reducing costs and satisfying staff while also seeking ways to improve patient outcomes. A nurse manager must implement strategies to advance health status and achieve rethinking and desired results.
A great leader knows there is overlap in the priorities, the delivery and the value to the customers and can design a system that functions to administer this plan to improve health care. This reengineering is an essential component to a health care organization if they intend to succeed in the industry (Boland, 1996). The need for more efficiency programs that create greater involvement amongst healthcare staff is critical to provide quality health care. An example of a program that utilizes collaborative learning and caring is used in some hospitals in Wisconsin in which a nurse, a physician, case manager and a pharmacist all get together within the first 90 minutes of a patient arrival and examine the patient together and then develop a single plan of care (Wood, 2012). This is an innovative approach to improve the health care efforts for our patients.
