Sustainable Developement: Sustainability development (as defined by the book) is: meeting the needs

Sustainable Developement: Sustainability development (as defined by the book) is: meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Note this talks about NEEDS, not just environment, not just social responsibility, not just economics, but all three.

See here below that illustrates Sustainable development:

Social responsibility is an ethical theory, in which individuals are accountable for fulfilling their civic duty; the actions of an individual must benefit the whole of society. In this way, there must be a balance between economic growth and the welfare of society and the environment.

Sustainable development

Economic responsibility means striving to ensure that we are profitable in order to create long-term value for our stakeholders and contribute to a global and sustainable economy. Keeping businesses going is an ethical responsibility so that people can work, make a wage, have a place to get food, clothes, etc. I use the example of McDonalds. It might be unhealthy but McDonalds serves a huge service to our sustainable development – it feeds, with adequate nutrition, those that only can afford an inexpensive meal. Without McDonalds, many will go hungry and/or eat even more unhealthy.

Environmental responsibility is to abstain from damaging natural environments. This is the most common area of sustainable development in today's news. Global warming, recycling, water conservation, etc.

Corporate Social Responsibility: CSR which is Corporate Social Responsibility and does include all the areas above. Here are four reasons why CSR is an issue for organizations:

-social responsible activities can create competitive advantages

– both positive and negative information about products and organization became more available (to consumers)

– organizations can use their products and brand identify to create social value, quality and consumer loyalty (green marketing in the case of environmental social responsibility)

– companies use their sustainable and socially responsible decisions to differentiate their firms and promote their products.
