Introduction

The first paragraph of the Introduction section does three things. It introduces the topic (e.g., employee performance problems), explains why it is important (e.g., poor performance costs the economy $billions), and gives a very general statement of the approach to be used (e.g., survey of HR directors to get their views on why some employees have poor performance). Subsequent paragraphs provide background and detailed rationale for the study. Disciplines vary in how much detail is needed, e.g., health science journals might only have a paragraph whereas management journals can go on for 10 or more pages. For our purposes, you can be brief, but do provide some rationale for your study and what you hope to accomplish. It is fine to cite some literature if you have it, but it is not necessary. At the end of the Introduction there is typically a section on the current study which provides a brief overview of the study approach and links it back to the purpose. After reading the Introduction the reader should know what you want to accomplish, why you want to accomplish it, and generally the approach you will take. It should be explained what the population will be and why it is the relevant population.

Method

The method section should provide a detailed description of your survey plan.. The various sections of the Method should be as follows.

Sample. Describe the population you wish to sample, and what the characteristics are expected to be. You should address who you will survey and how many will you survey.

Be sure to discuss the ideal sample size. The size required depends on your purpose and the analysis you will conduct. For our purposes you can rely on rules of thumb (e.g., until saturation with interviews) or typical practices. With research grants you would conduct a power analysis to indicate an optimal sample size that gives an adequate chance of finding real effects, but doesn’t waste money with a large sample that is overkill. You don’t need that for this project.

Procedure. Outline your plan for conducting the study. What modality will you use for the survey? How will you approach your respondents, what will you request of them, will you offer incentives, and how many reminders will you provide? Walk the reader through the steps in data collection. If online, what platform will you use? If paper-and-pencil, how will you distribute and collect (e.g., U.S. mail or distribute in a meeting). For interviews, provide details of where you will conduct them, how they will be recorded, and how transcriptions will be produced. A reader should be able to replicate your study by following your plan.

Survey Instrument. Describe your instrument (and include it in an appendix). Include an overview of all the variables you want to study, and how you will measure them. If you have off-the-shelf measures, provide descriptions including the name, number of items, and response formats.

Analysis Plan. Give an overview of how you plan to analyze the data. Referring back to the Analyzing Survey Results section of Sub-Module 3, there can be different kinds of questions that you might answer with your analysis. Whatever you suggest, it should match your research question. Some might require statistical tests, but others do not.

Copy of Survey Instrument

At the end of the paper, include a copy of your survey instrument. Part of this exercise is for you to get the experience of assembling a survey. It doesn’t have to be long, but it should adequately address your research question.

Scope of Your Survey Study

One of the most difficult challenges in developing research questions is to know how big your problem should be. A problem that is too small can be trivial, whereas a large problem can be unwieldy. For example, if you ask the question, “Do women like chocolate more than men”, you could answer this with two questions—Do you like chocolate? Are you a man or woman? The scope of this is too small for our purposes. A better question would be if men and women differ in preferences for different ice cream flavors. You could ask about preference for a dozen or more popular ice cream flavors, which would allow you to determine flavor preference patterns between men and women.
