The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations in 1948, proclaims “everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of oneself and one’s family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care.” The U.S. government, following other industrialized nations has taken steps toward universal health care. Critics argue it is the responsibility of the individual not the government, to ensure personal health. So the question is, is health care a right or a privilege and why? How does this relate to business ethics?
