The impact of electronic health records impacts all aspects of the medical profession.

There were nurses that chose to retire early rather than to learn the new charting system. I was grateful for the new system in both jobs. It was difficult in the beginning, however once I learned the system I cannot imagine ever going back to traditional charting. I also love the idea of merging systems so that no matter where the patient is their medical records can be accessed. “Digital access to medical information is becoming a core domain of medicine” (Lyles, Fruchterman, Youdelman, & Schillinger, 2017).

There are various benefits to electronic health records such as:

Accessibility

Efficiency

Reduced Medical Errors

Increased communication and collaboration

Electronic health records impact multiple areas of the healthcare profession. The use of electronic health records and patient portals have become a focal point for organizations across the healthcare continuum. The healthcare provider benefits from accessibility and efficiency. Communication and collaboration increases which improves quality of care and that is the ultimate goal for the patient. As technology progresses and electronic health records and use of patient portals increase, the continuity of care and patient satisfaction will increase which will improve patient outcomes and that is beneficial to the healthcare provider, the patient, and the organization. The impact of electronic health records impacts all aspects of the medical profession.
