DISCUSSION TOPICS:

TOPIC 1:

UNIT I What type of music you like to listen to that you feel relates to everyday life

Directions:

Music is very important to me. I imagine you hear it around you as well. With television and commercials so prevalent, music plays a very important role setting the mood in commercials when advertising products. When we watch films, notice how music helps establish the mood and sets the pace and can create suspense. In life we also find that we play different types of music for different occasions. I like to listen to Classical and Baroque music when I read. I especially enjoy the “Four Seasons;” by Antonio Vivaldi when I want to listen to music that does not have words. The Autumn section of the “Four Season” is the one I usually play the most because I enjoy the loud and then suddenly soft parts of the dynamic levels played by the string players. I find that I do not ever get tired of listening to good musicians playing this composition. To me, I can hear it every day when I am reading the paper or in the car driving to work or going to the grocery store. I feel that this music is timeless and even though it is over 300 years old. (SLO 4)

Your discussion prompt is to write about the type of music that you like to listen to on a daily basis in your daily life and explain why you enjoy listening to the music you selected.

Directions:

You may find this in discussion in UNIIT I of the text but you have probably thought about it since your read it and now you probably have some more opinions. “A great work of art remains meaningful.” Do you feel that art and technology are both important? However, they serve different purposes?

Now explain why you probably have thought about why we need both and why they are so different. (SLO 3)

Your discussion prompt is to write about the difference between art and technology and give examples of meaningful Fine Art.

Explain why some people think that a work of art that remains meaningful does not need to be changed and/or upgraded like a piece of technology such as a cell phone or your computer.

TOPIC 4:

Unit V Why study the fine and performing arts is important.

Directions:

To me, it is important to study the fine and performing arts because I learn to appreciate other cultures other than my own. When I was growing up I did not see very many individuals who looked different than myself because of where I lived. When I went to college that changed of course. I went to live in a city and I also was able to travel to many countries and that gave me the opportunity to study languages and many cultures. For that, I am very grateful. This was a great experience and very eye opening. Two of my favorite courses my freshman year in college were World Religions and Art History. These gave me a new viewpoints. These led me to the understanding that if I studied, I could actually learn to enjoy history because history was actually the story about people and their culture. This was very interesting to me. I became fascinated in researching about what happened in someone’s life and why an artist did their type of art work.To me, it was so enjoyable to find out just what it was in their life that influenced them to do their work.

By reading and studying about artist’s beliefs and culture, I learned to appreciate their architecture and their art works. I also learned to see the value in trying to understand how it takes studying about their culture in order to learn to appreciate their work. After I learned to appreciate their work, I began to have more fun experiencing art by being able to recognize other artist’s works and art styles. I learned to enjoy the experience of viewing the art because I had an historical context and learned to understand it. I learned to enjoy all types of art from all over the world because I learned the value of accepting art from places that I originally was not familiar with and after I learned to accept differences, I valued and respected their work.” (SLO 2)

Your discussion prompt is to write a short paragraph about how this course has made you think about your own life and write a circumstance that you may have come across during this session or that you encountered from studying Humanities that may have helped you learn to appreciate another culture better. Write a paragraph about an example of an experience or something that you read about while enrolled in this class.

After watching, write a paragraph about one of the performances mentioned in Unit One.
