After reading this document, select five of the numbered points (of which there are 182) contained within the document that you believe are the most critical to the understanding of how these UN operations function. State each point by number and title, and explain why you selected each one.

One of the most difficult aspects of evaluating the effectiveness of peace operations is determining which criteria should be utilized in deciding whether or not an operation should be considered successful. After completing this week’s readings, create an initial post that addresses the following:

• Select five criteria that you feel are most effective in determining the level of success of a peace operation.
• Briefly explain why you selected each of these criteria.
• Identify what you think may be the greatest weakness of each of these criteria as an analytical tool.
• Describe why many analysts and scholars have difficulty in defining the success or failure of a peace operation.

Military forces are often utilized worldwide to provide assistance in times of natural and humanitarian disaster.  In the von Treskow article, the author argues that these types of missions are essential to the overall security mission of organizations such as NATO. Do you agree with the author’s assertion that these types of humanitarian missions are integral to security operations? Why or why not? Are humanitarian operations an efficient use of military resources? How have these operations supported military missions throughout the world?

Since the end of the Cold War, the manner in which the media has covered peacekeeping operations has had a dramatic impact on the public’s perception of these missions. One of the most influential pieces of this reportage was made into a motion picture called Black Hawk Down. Additionally, numerous other missions have been covered by various forms of print and photographic media. After reading the articles by Moeller and Holguin, create an initial post that addresses the following:

• What are some of the types of media coverage that have influenced public perception of peace operation?
• In what manner can the media influence these missions?
• Overall, has the media had a negative or positive impact on peace operations and the public’s perception of these missions? Why?

In 1-page answer the following:

Cultural awareness in peacekeeping operations has become increasingly recognized as being a critical element of effective missions. After completing this week’s reading from Watson, address the following in your initial post:

• How can cultural awareness improve the effectiveness of peace operations?
• How can arts, sports, and popular culture impact a peace operation?
• What impact can the foreign language skills of peacekeepers have on a mission?
• How are some ways in which peacekeepers be trained in cultural awareness?

Is the utilization of various military forces an effective allocation of a state’s resources? Based upon our readings and discussions, as well as additional outside sources, you will address this daunting question and provide support for your opinion. Address the following to complete this assignment:

1. Examine how adept military organizations are at keeping peace, and describe the criteria for maintaining peace in a region of conflict.
2. Discuss the inherent difficulties in conducting peace operations.
3. Discuss whether or not private companies can be utilized instead of or in conjunction with military forces in maintaining peace.
4. Examine the role cultural and societal differences play in peace operations and discuss if and how these differences can be overcome.
5. Discuss if and how humanitarian missions pose the same difficulties as peacekeeping operations.
6. Assess humanitarian and peacekeeping operations as conducted by military forces and discuss whether they should be abandoned altogether or if they are effective and why.
