The 2002 movie Maid in Manhattan explores how the reality of social class plays a role in society, no matter how much we think we are exempt from thinking about our class identity. The movie especially helps us in thinking about how social class produces divisions across the economic spectrum. In this sense, the movie represents the symbolic interaction theory as proposed by Max Weber – the idea that people make sense of their everyday social interactions by using their own understanding of ‘differences’ in the world, and especially how people judge each other based on social class, prestige, and honor.
