NOMMAR

To visit a loved one in a traditional cemetery can sometimes be a depressing moment in time. Imagine if that visit could be to a beautiful, well-maintained park instead. Currently, companies called The Living Urn, among others, offer the ability to place a loved one’s ashes inside a biodegradable urn that contains tree seeds. Over time, the tree grows, blossoms, and begins to support other life forms such as insects and wildlife. Families can choose from a variety of foliage ranging from evergreens, to flowering bushes, to annual blossoming trees (The Living Urn, 2016). The goal is to utilize this invention and take it one-step further; create a park, formerly known as a cemetery, where families can purchase plots to plant their trees in honor of their loved ones. Beautiful pathways lined with a variety of trees, park benches to rest and reminisce, seem like a more positive way to remember those you love. A gorgeous iron marker could adorn the base of each tree with traditional headstone inscriptions. Life would thrive and flourish in an environment such as this. The benefits of this forest of life only begin with the following truths; trees provide oxygen, combat climate change, clean the air, heal, reduce violence and create natural wildlife habitats (Lipkis, 2016). Butterflies would mingle through the trees, squirrels and birds would be chirping away with their families. The environment would be lively and uplifting. In all it would be much more pleasant to visit than a landscape filled with headstones, mausoleums, limited foliage and the tenuous task of navigating between graves, in other words a traditional cemetery. Imagine needing one last hug from a lost friend, and being able to give a tree a comforting hug anytime you please.  ( There are regulations of how to disperse  ashes so this needs to be clearly investigated state by state and even city regulations. http://ideas.time.com/2013/06/13/cremation-is-on-the-rise-but-where-to-put-the-ashes/, http://www.cremationsolutions.com/information/scattering-ashes/scattering-ashes-laws-and-regulations,   It does seem like an idea that is different )

Using the NOMMAR model this innovation addresses the need for an ecologically sustainable alternative to traditional methods of body disposal/after death arrangements. As a relatively low-tech innovation, the available options are restricted by availability and what Mother Nature determines viable to specific climates and geographic location. As there is no shortage in death the marketability is wide open. While there are currently companies offering the product there is not a facility specific to the use of the product. That is, there is no “cemetery” dedicated to the “reforestation” of an area through gravesite memorial trees. Considering the concerns of global warming, deforestation, the depletion of the ozone and multiple other issues regarding environment and the sustainability of the earth, this product/service is not only possible it is exceptionally relevant today and to our future.
